Saf.mw.712.xsRain delay during the shooting of the Material World big picture in South Africa. The Qampie family had to cover all their possessions, which had already been moved outside, during the brief but fierce thunderstorm that swept across Soweto. An hour later Peter Menzel took the photo that is in the book—Material World: A Global Family Portrait. {{The Qampie family lives in a 400 square foot concrete block duplex house in the sprawling area of Southwest Township (called Soweto), outside Johannesburg (Joberg) South Africa. Poppy works for a jobs training company in downtown Joberg. Simon doesn’t have steady work but picks up odd jobs here and there as he can. They don’t feel safe in their neighborhood and try to have everyone home behind locked doors and windows before nightfall to guard against violence. Family members are: Simon Qampie (48, father); Poppy Nosizwe Qampie (36, mother); Pearl Qampie (14 daughter); Irene Qampie (11, daughter); George (4, son); Mateo (2, son); Leah Nosizwe (64, Poppy’s mother); Anna (18, Poppy’s sister). From Peter Menzel’s Material World Project that showed 30 statistically average families in 30 countries with all their possessions.}} 1994 Peter Menzel www.menzelphoto.com Material World
