Their daughter Mio is a first year university student, concentrating on biology (her first field experience, in May, was milking a cow). Daughter Maya, 14, attends 8th grade and still plays the piano. Neither girl swims competitively any longer. The family has replaced a great deal of their belongings since the original big picture was taken, hence the large number of items in the Material World 2001 big picture. Their dog Izumaru has died, but they did not replace him. Mio has a new laptop for school, and both girls have mobile phones. The Nintendo game player is still hooked up to the family’s extra television set in the dining room, but it is not used as often as it had been when the girls were younger. The parents have a television in their bedroom that Kazuo watched when he was bedridden with a back ailment and a problem with his pancreas, and
